Pachacutec at FDL has a nice summary of twelve reasons why we should not trust Chuck Schumer as head of the DSCC. (I would add a thirteenth reason -- that he is still an enthusiastic supporter of the Iraq war.) I strongly urge readers here to follow the link and learn more about a man who would claim credit for Dem victories on November 7th, but who has really worked harder than just about anyone to tear down the netroots effort.
Power brokers in the Democratic Party have been sending signals all week that they are trying to consolidate power with party insiders and move the party even farther to the right than it already is. So while we must continue to work to rein in the Bush Administration, we also need to keep our eye on the enemy within -- party insiders who are interested in maintaining the status quo and resisting change.
Many who read this will recoil from it -- there are quite a few people here who I think are not quite ready to face the fact that if we are to have meaningful change in the way this country is run we are going to have to deal with the rats in our own house. Chuck Schumer may be the largest and nastiest of those rats in the Democratic Party that we have to root out. He is not up for reelection again until 2010; however, we should be ready to challenge him then with the best primary opponent we can bring to bear (Pssst, Eliot, want to be a Senator in 2010???) Like all large rats, Schumer will be a ferocious enemy and will fight like a tiger to hold onto his power and privileges, but if we shrink from difficult fights, we'll never change the status quo -- which is what the REAL fight is for.
Chuck Schumer IS the enemy -- of everything we worked for in 2002, 2004, and 2006.
