After Sierra Club et al. booted Pombo's rump out of Wash. DC, it occurred to me that they may be an instrument of effective Global Warming policy change. Sure enough articles appeared in several of my local newspapers in the past weeks on Sierra Club's "Cool Cities" initiative which has signed aboard mayors and a host of activists.
Since it seemed too late to add a comment to another blog, I wanted to bookmark it for reference on the topic in general, i.e. raising more concern on the environment.
some background from another blog
Civic leaders are signing a pledge and activists are signing up to ensure things happen:
Sierra Club Cool Cities
A big problem is often broken into more manageable chunks, in this case wedges, in order to arrive at a solution:
Stabilization Wedges
Since the Science 2004 article on stability wedges (which can be found in the above link), the potential some of the wedges has improved, in which case, some might be doubled or tripled. If one drops a wedge (it is objectionable), the others will need to be adjusted accordingly. Yet, they need to be given a big push on the large scale in order to catch up with the increases of CO2 underway.
In terms of the stabilization wedges, the Cool Cities takes on city government fleets, public transport, co-generation (efficiency), etc. It all adds up and can make a difference, just like the last election.
