I sometimes wonder what goes on in the heads of newspaper editors as they compose their editions. They no doubt know what they are doing. But why are they doing it?
A couple months ago, in the bad days B.C.C. (Before the Change in Congress), I posted a diary
-- "Jesus Frist"! -- about this picture of the now-departed Senator that graced the front page of the New York Times:
Mmm. To think that that was just a few scant months ago. Seeing it again reminds me that, whatever this current Congress does or doesn't do, we can at least thank the heavens (and Jon Tester and Jim Webb) for the new day....
Now the folks at the NYT have made another interesting statement of sorts. Here's the image that accompanies the current lead story, "Iraqi Sunni Lands Show Oil and Gas Promise":
This has the makings of an iconic image (no pun intended). It seems to capture a whole lot of what is going on, consciously and sub-consciously, at this ugly moment in history. But what's the message? What's the intent? I'll add a poll to suggest a few options! Additional interpretations welcome!
