Bush is bad news to large populations in need of help. Take for example the population of the Gulf Coast states. A year and a half ago two concurrent storms absolutely demolished the area, yet today whole stretches of Interstate-10 are vast wastelands of the detritus of life: washing machines, coaches, garbage, damaged homes collapsing in on themselves, cars, and boats. The population is still largely displaced.
Of course, that isn’t the story.
The underreported story of the year:
Around 1.8 million Iraqis are displaced within their own country and an estimated two million have sought refuge in nearby countries, chiefly Syria which is hosting one million and Jordan has 750,000.
By the way, where is the mainstream press in America? Up Anna Nicole’s dead ass is where. Where are the stories covering the massive heartache of broken families and broken country? Where are the “journalists” challenging the administration to explain why this is a liberation and ask if who thinks this was worth the effort? Where are the cameras that can’t track over 3 million total displaced but if anyone on American Idol has a bowel movement the cameras are clicking a thousand frames a minute. Why is this being covered in a blog instead of in a news program? Because there are no news programs. There is only infotainment and who knows how much is actually true content and how much is fluff?
I mean whom can we trust when David Gregory is dancing with Karl Rove? And why are they all doing Hip Hop skits? All trying to be Black people, except for the only Black person on the stage and he looked to have no power or access beyond the dinner party itself.
What are we to make of a media that misses filming and interviewing upwards of two million displaced persons just to hear their stories? We are to make of it a media that is owned lock stock and barrel, one that knows that it sleeps with the men in power, it is comprised of like minded ideologues, and it is wont to actually eviscerate the presidency and give the nation, or world, a well rounded view of the type of misery, and the depth of despair that this bullshit war has caused. Our media is wont to put on flak vests and actually go get the stories. Our media remembers, actually sleeps with the same people they presume to report on.
The situation is described by the UN as the biggest refugee crisis in the Middle East since the 1948 crisis of Palestinian refugees.
…
"Syria and Jordan have been extremely generous in supporting Iraqi refugees, but they are paying a huge price.
"These countries have been very generous, but they haven't had any meaningful support from the international community."
Mr Guterres said Jordan and Syria needed both financial and technical support from the international community and vulnerable people needed opportunities for re-settlement.
He said most refugees would be able to repatriate, but that wouldn't be the solution for those who had been victims of torture, lost members of their families or had diseases that couldn't be treated in Iraq.
…
What are we to make of a press that gives 24/7 coverage of local scandals and barely sees hundreds of thousands of children trying to find safety in a war zone we created? Whay are we to make of media companies that will report whatever flimsy lies fed to them by Bush operatives accusing Mideast countries of harboring terrorists, but we don't even bother apoplogizing to the same countries for placing hunger and medical need at their front door? What do we make of a press that is out-thought and provides less analysis actual weekly analysis to comedy Shows?
That said, here is another angle that will generate hardly a word on mass market television news.
There are 150,000 Palestinians in Baghdad who are being targeted by the militia because they are thought to be associated with the previous regime and 600 of them have been killed.
This is the mess Bush and the neo-cons made. This is the blood. These are the dead. These are the sins of this administration and the complicity of a chummy This is the mess that we predicted and the over paid punditocracy missed. This is hornets nest that we cried foul to and no one with any access to power was even listening.
A sidebar story here is that the punditocracy is dead. They may continue to publish, and continue to be paid out the wazoo. They may even have special access to power. But the punditocracy is getting its opinionated ass kicked when it comes to predicting results of bad national policy. How long before all those asshats have to work in a real job, like I do?
