I can’t keep the images out of my head of my husband, a Vietnam vet and POW, bruised and beaten and bloody, on the floor of a dirt cell, incoherent from exhaustion, starved for lack of food, with no means of telling his family or his country where he was, or that he was even alive. He suffered from his injuries for over thirty years, until his fatal heart attack two years ago.
People are being tortured by the United States in Guantanamo Bay and other places around the world as we speak in the name of EVERY American. I can’t keep their images, their screams, out of my head.
Today the Senate Judiciary recommended to the full Senate, by a vote of 11-8, that Judge Michael Mukasey be confirmed as Attorney General of the United States. This man could not say whether controlled drowning is torture, and those who voted with the 11 believe he should be the chief lawyer of the United States. They did it over the screams of those who are being held as we speak.
So, before the vote of the full Senate, thanks to some very kind and generous Kossacks, I will go to Washington, DC, and speak for those whose screams were muffled today. I will be Dan’s voice and try to change some hearts.
I need your help. If you have any contacts within the US Senate who might help to get my message out, please let me know. My email is in my profile.
Dan left me a mission, to tell his story and stop torture as the law, policy and practice of the United States. I will continue that mission until the torture stops or I no longer have breath in my body.
Please contact your senators and ask them to vote against the nomination of Michael Mukasey as Attorney General of the United States.
Please stand up and say:
NOT IN MY NAME!
NEVER IN MY NAME!
And KEEP saying it until the torture stops.
For Dan,
Heather
