As the cleansing winds of change swirl over the battlefield of America's greatest conflict, the contest to reclaim the soul of America from the profound shame suffered at the hands of the Great Imposter who has corrupted this nation with messages of fear and mistrust, I am reminded of another great nation in its darkest hour.
Over one-half century ago, Britain's great leader rose up and rallied the nation against a real threat of a real invasion. In the battle of Britain, with the outcome uncertain and facing a far superior force, the tiny Royal Air Force managed to turn the tide and hold back the invincible Luftwaffe. In a historic speech to Parliament Winston Churchill spoke these immortal words about the efforts of a heroic few who saved England: "never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
I was thinking about the magic of those words and how they captured the drama of the historic battle, the sacrifice of the warriors and the gratitude of a community under siege. It occurred to me that Churchill's speech could be adapted to apply to our great spiritual battle against the darkness of the Bush administration: "NEVER IN THE ANNALS OF MISRULE HAVE SO FEW STOLEN SO MUCH FROM SO MANY." Our fraudulent President has brought America to her knees: he has stolen her treasury, crippled her economy, trampled on her constitution, tarnished her institutions at home and sullied her reputation abroad; contrary to his campaign promises, he has made this nation more dependent than ever on foreign resources. It is truly America's darkest hour and yet, as Robert Green said, "in the night of death hope sees a star and, listening, love hears the rustling of a wing."
There is a star out there, folks, and you can hear the rustling of wings. As even our pusillanimous press must acknowledge, these winds are gathering momentum, promising to blow the "few who have stolen so much" into the dustbin of history -- and perhaps even into the court of law. Godspeed to change.
