EDIT: I am talking about the USERS of this site, not the site itself. It's a user-driven community. I don't expect Kos to put up an Obama banner up top.
You know, this just struck me in a Louisiana results thread, and I'm going to say it here as well:
Some say this is a pro-Obama website.
Well, why shouldn't this be a pro-Obama site?
I've been seeing Hillary Clinton poll somewhere between "no freakin' clue" and "pie" on Kos' monthly straw polls here since, what, December of 2004, it feels like. She was about as popular as Mike Gravel on this site until right around the same time it started becoming obvious John Edwards wasn't going to go the distance. Suddenly, half of Daily Kos users back her? Where'd that come from? Were you always all just out sick on the days Kos would post the straw polls, here all along, but silent?
This site has ALWAYS been opposed to DLC-style politics, to 17-state strategies, to Terry Fucking McAuliffe. Why on earth shouldn't a wide swath of its users back Barack Obama, who's taking advantage of the hard work done by Howard Dean to build a national Democratic Party? Hillary Clinton and Mark Penn and Terry Fucking McAuliffe are having a lousy weekend, and they're going to have another lousy Tuesday, and I'm a bit less sure about the following weekend, but they're doing the Giuliani thing here, just as they have throughout the campaign. It's not just that they've completely ignored the red states -- why would a DLC politician pay attention to Nebraska, after all, since it won't vote for the Democrat in November -- but I saw someone post before about how Clinton had zero Washington field offices, and Obama had three. Why?
How many times have Clinton supporters pointed out how she won California, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts? Good for her, so did John Kerry in November of 2004. So did Al Gore in November of 2000. How'd that work out for us? Mike Gravel could win those states in November! Talk to me about the guy who can actually put "red" states in play! Talk to me about the guy who appeals so much to independents that the bullshit media-driven "McCain is a rebel" meme makes no headway!
Look, are we going to win Nebraska in November? I doubt it -- but which candidate would you rather see at the top of the ticket if you were running for state legislature as a Democrat? Barack Obama helps build a nationwide party.
This is a progressive site, with passionate people who want to create change. Going back to hoping and praying that we can cobble together a 17-state electoral college majority is not change. It's no way forward.
