This is the time for all good Super Hero Super Delegates to join forces, don their capes, put on their magic decoder rings, tap their power wrist bands together and join Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer in protecting the Democratic party's nomination process. A red state Democratic leader urges all super delegates to remain uncommitted and deliver their votes as a massive block to whomever has the lead in mere mortal delegates at the end of the primary cycle.
More below the fold and a call to action at the end of this diary.
The Gov is a nice guy
Yesterday I had the honor of attending a small private luncheon with about a dozen others at the NCDP HQ. The fine and very progressive North Carolina Democratic State Party chair Jerry Meek called us there to come listen to visiting Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer's vision for the future and his thoughts on the present.
The Governor is an amiable humorous man, unpretentious, casual and he made an extra effort to go around the room and introduce himself to each person before the lunch sit down. He has a roundish big air to himself and his hands and skin reflect the years he spent as a rancher and bona fide steward of the land. It's apparent he did real work and not just talk or brush clearing photo op modeling work. I was warmed by his smile and his eyes have an inviting "sit down here near me, I have a story to tell ya" quality.
The table chatter was interesting and mostly centered around energy policy or more appropriately the startling lack of any real, coherent sustainable energy policy. In fact the general theme of the talk was sustainability, even touching on the decidedly un-sustainable health care system we now have.
Sustainability of all things as a theme
What I want to bring to every Kossaks attention is what the Governor said when he stood to speak to us as a group. Among other things Brian Schweitzer talked about how important the sustainability of the Democratic party's political process is to it's future. He talked about the thousands of new and energized young people entering the political playing field on the side of the democratic party and how they are the new torch bearers. A generation more connected and more keenly aware of WE as a people rather than ME as a person than any generation before it in a long time. He remarked how this generation has every right to be royally pissed at our ( I'm 50 ) generation for saddling them with an unsustainable future, burdened with debt and left standing on a raped soil tainted with poisons. He remarked that it is a true testament to their character that for the most part they are not mad at us but instead see an opportunity to come together for a common good and be the progressive change they want for their future. He gets it. He sees the future.
The Sustainability of the Democratic Party
Then he said a remarkable thing. He said that out of respect for this new generation of Democratic party activists it is imperative that we as a party do not disenfranchise them and rob them of their voice and choice. The Governor said that as of a day or two ago he has begun contacting all the uncommitted super delegates to encourage them to remain uncommitted to any particular candidate and instead commit to do what they were elected to do and deliver the will of the people to the front runner with the most delegates when the time comes. He will ask them to sign a petition pledging this because he thinks we owe at least this to the thousands of regular folks that make up the Democratic party's base.
A call to action
Please do your part and take a moment to call and thank the good Governor for his leadership on this important issue:

Equally important and perhaps even more so, immediately begin contacting the super delegates in your state and let them know about this initiative by the Governor of Montana. Give them the governors contact info and personally ask them to contact him and sign that petition.
As of today there are approximately 796 super delegates that have not endorsed a candidate. Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to take a good look at that list and contact as many as you can. et them know that super delegates, like true super hero's need to use their super powers in a positive quest for Truth, Justice and the American Democratic way.
If you are so inclined please rec this diary so the good Gov gets as many calls as possible thanking him for his leadership on this and so that as many uncommited SD's as possible are asked to stand with Gov Schweitzer.
Gotta run out to work and pay the bills but will come back later in the day as often as time permits to participate in the comments. Thanks for reading this far.
