Several posts here on DKOS have devolved into detailed policy analysis with various failings being found in the platforms of the candidate you dislike and strengths being found in the platform of the one you do like. In general, I like policy debates. In this case, they are pointless.
Below the fold explains why.
First, all policies tied to economic issues including health-care, social-security, medi-care, taxes, and mortgage issues are pointless. The economy is, at best, troubled. What the situation will be in ten months is up for grabs but almost certainly the situation will be sufficiently grim that policies expressed now will be outdated by economic reality. For instance, a sharp economic slowdown would cause the already huge deficit to reach dangerous levels. At that point, reducing the deficit would be the first order of business and everything else would have to take a back seat.
Foreign policy is even more frightening (and not completely unrelated to economics). At any moment Iraq could simply explode. Large factions of the Shia could decide enough is enough, or the Sunnis, or both. When we leave may not be up to us. How we leave may not even be up to us. And what if BushCo decides on a preemptive strike on Iran? Pakistan, Lebanon, and Gaza also look unsettled. In ten months, where will we be and what options will we have? Anyone’s guess. I like Obama's idea of engagement - but with whom and about what?
In short, broad outlines and principles are very important – it is principles and realism that help form successful policies. But the details of any plan at this point are of marginal importance at best. So relax, the differences between Obama’s and HRC’s health care, Iraq, Iran, and Economic policies are not nearly as important as their characters. No one predicted FDR, or Lincoln, or TR. But history and character combine to make great – or terrible – presidents, not platforms. I support Obama, not because of his platform, which has some problems, but because I think he is the better person and more likely to adapt well in the face of an unknown, and currently unsettled looking, future. If you support Hillary, good for you. But don’t be deceived by their respective plans, neither's plans will survive the first encounter with the hard facts that face this country.
