I think that it has become increasingly transparent that the continuation of the nomination battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is harming the unity of the party, and now may even be driving up Barack Obama's negatives, and hurting us in the coming general election. Thus, I beleive that it is time that we take action to help bring this damaging and bitter process to a close.
One of the things that has always impressed me about dKos is the community's power when it comes time to take action. Whether the issue is getting needed surgery for a young woman denied assistance by her Health Care, or targetting advertisers for Ann Coulter, Kossacks have shown the ability to affect the world when we are united and driven.
Please follow me across the gap to discuss what we can do to end this battle.
Now, I shall preface this suggestion with a disclaimer. I am a freshman in college who has only in the last 2 or 3 years become politically active. I have neither the experience nor the expertise to be sure of the affects of the action I suggest, and thus would ask those of you who do have that experience to make suggestions and corrections of your own.
My suggestion is as follows:
Given that the Super Delegates could decide this nomination if they made a strong movement towards Senator Obama, essentially forcing Senator Clinton out of the race, I beleive it is time we lean on them. My plan is three-fold:
- First, contact the three big names who are not currently committed (Howard Dean, Al Gore, and John Edwards) and ask them to back Senator Obama and ask Senator Clinton to drop out. Also, make a concentrated donation effort to the DNC to show Gov. Dean that we will back him 110%.
- Second, Contact your representatives and elected officials who have not endorsed Senator Obama and let them know that it is time to end this and ask them to back Senator Obama.
- Third, call independants in Pennsylvania and remind them to reregister as Democrats for the Primary. Even if the Supers do not act, we can help to bring an end to this by keeping Hillary from walking away with the nomination.
Now, as I said, I'm not expert, but it seems to me that this could be an effective plan of action. I would greatly appreciate suggestions and discussion on what we can do. Kossacks have, in the past, demonstrated commendable hard work on a variety of issues, and I beleive we can help to bring an end to this divisive, and frankly energy-wasting battle for the Nomination. It is time to bring the war to John McSame and the Republicans.
