So, here we are on Friday - GOOD Friday - and I am chatting on the telephone with my very Republican sister. We love each other, so our conversations - even when they spill over into politics - are mostly civil!
I hadn't had a chance to catch up with her all week (we've both been a little under the weather) but after we got through with the family updates, I decided to "go there!" and asked her what she thought about the whole dust-up about Obama and the Reverend Wright!
Well, she was disgusted. But, it's not what you think...
follow me over the flip...
She's disgusted all right!
But, NOT with Obama - NO!
And, NOT with the Reverend Wright or even what he said - NO!
She is completely disgusted with the TV news shows and how they are trying to create this tempest in a teapot!
O. M. G. This is my very Republican sister we're talking about here!
Then, she went on...
She sounded very excited! She likes Obama, he's different, fresh. She's fascinated by his personal history and said he seems to have good judgment. She was chatting with some (very conservative) children of her friends and asked how the kids felt on campus...THEY all like Obama. She likes his wife - likes her attitude! She appreciated his speech on race and likes his demeanor.
She was happy to hear that I too supported Barack Obama (for some reason, she thought I supported Clinton). Now, she DID say that it didn't necessarily mean that she would vote for him, but she didn't say she wouldn't, either.
I don't know how many will see this, but I found this conversation so hopeful, so uplifting, that I simply had to share it. If my Republican sister can feel this way about Barack Obama, after the week of distractions and mischaracterizations that the media has subjected us to, I have to say...I am feeling a whole new wave of hope.
For this agnostic, this is a VERY Good Friday!
