Stephen Colbert started a Pennsylvania Straw Poll fundraiser, Democralypse Now, the goal of which was to raise $66,001 dollars in donations to PA classrooms, on behalf of each candidate in the democratic primary race. The candidate with the most donations in their name "wins" the straw poll, but more importantly, the children get money for books, AV equipment, and other educational tools.
Now, you may ask why these kids need a fundraiser to get educational supplies. That is the wrong question. The right one is: which candidate is winning the straw poll?
So far, Obama supporters have raised more than $150,000. The original goal, $66,001, was surpassed in about a week. The new goal, $100,001, was shattered in the second week. A third goal, $150,001, has now been passed, and donations are still coming in. These donations have impacted 31,250 children in PA. Blown away by all the generosity, Colbert has upped the ante once again, challenging Obama supporters to raise $200,001.
Clinton's supporters still haven't reached the original goal of $66,001, and are just shy of $29,000. But that's still more than 8,000 children being helped.
Supporters of both Democratic candidates have given approximately $180,000 to almost 40,000 schoolchildren. Good work, Democrats. If not for you, these kids would not have the books, musical instruments, or art supplies they needed. They wouldn't have journals in which to write poetry, nor math kits to improve arithmetic skills.
These kids don't care about bitter-gate, or sniper-gate, or whichever else is the corporate media's Pound-on-Democrats theme of the week. These students want to learn, and they need our help. Why can't the schools afford books for their students? Because Bush is sending the money to Iraq. And if McCain becomes President, that will continue to happen for 100 years.
So, don't tell me Clinton or Obama has pushed you over the edge, and you're voting for McCain, staying at home, or writing in someone else on Election Day. Tell these kids who love to read that the government can't afford any new books or bookshelves for their school, because a politician pissed you off in the primary.
Alternatively, you could stick it to that horrible Other Democrat by donating a few dollars to a good cause. I presume the results of this poll will be announced on the Colbert Report, and right now, Obama is blowing Clinton out of the water.....
