So early this morning, I made my way to the Charleston Civic Center to see our future president. My Brother, My mother and I were three rows back and could see the twinkle in his eye. This guy, for lack of a more badass word, is a badass. Sure, he knows many of the people voting against him tomorrow are racist, but he was here in the flesh speaking to their problems.
I've been campaigning for the past month or so for Barack, and believe me, it ain't easy. I am of Indian decscent, so people at first glance don't realize i've been living in WV my whole life.
I've heard so many racist things doing the phonebanks in huntington, and also straight to my face.
All I know is, the offices in Charleston and Huntington were working hard, despite the odds against them.
I remember sitting in the front office in huntington hearing random "fuck obama" screams as cars whizzed by. Talk about a toxic enviornment.
But I have hope..
If a short kid with a funny name can win Freshman Class President of Point Pleasant High School (me 1996, lol),
Why can't a skinny kid with a funny name win West Virginia's vote for Presidency?
Perhaps the Obama campaign in WV just needs to bring it back down to their level.
Todays speech was an example of how Barack is making strides. He spoke directly about Veterans issues, and the dangers we face in the next decade. He pledged to work tirelessly to get veterans off the streets and revamp the VA.
As his speech ended i rushed over to greet him. He looked me in the eye and told me thank you, as did I. Although it was a brief exchange, it is very important to me. It gives me inspiration to go work for all my dreams, and keep an even temperment (one of my biggest flaws is having a fiery temper.)
I don't think West Virginia is a throwaway for Barack Obama in November. West Virginians will open their ears again once Barack gets the nomination.
We can win their hearts, West Virginians can be good people.
BTW, taken with iphone, THIS CAMERA SUCKS.
