There have been so many Menes and viral themes in this primary season to leave one spinning in a sea of bullshit. But there is one in particular that continues to be emphasized that it makes me want to vomit buckets of green monkey shit.
As I was siting and watching A Bucket of Crap's coverage on Nightline, tonight they were going on with the Mainstream Media's favorite, and most insulting, meme of this election, how can Barack win the election if he cannot get the votes of the Stupids.
This theme, which is harped on by the court jesters who bloviate and prostrate themselves in front of the Washington elites, hoping for a pat on the head and some scraps from the table, is not only insulting to those working clas voters they claim to understand, it is illustrative of how little the press has learned from the last seven and a half years.
Beginning in 1999 and running through the 2000 election, the press actively campaigned for the stupid candidate. The result, seven years of evil banality, two un-winnable wars and a slow slide into recession with record numbers of people losing their homes and health insurance because this administration does not give a shit.
What is the media's response, when our banal little turd told us Tuesday he gave up golf out of solidarity for the military families who mare losing their loved ones because of his obsession with blowing shit up. They focus on how Obama cannot be president because he can not get the vote of stupid people.
What was their response, when Bush told our brothers and sisters in uniform, two days before the 40th anniversary of My Lai and on the day the Winter Soldier hearings began in Silver Springs, that he would love to be a man in uniform because the life of a soldier in Afghanistan and Iraq is so damned romantic.
Did they talk about how when he had the opportunity to serve in Vietnam he went AWOL from the Texas Air national Guard. Did one of these self satisfied hacks, who pass for journalists, think of Wilfred Owen's magnificent Dulce et Decorum Est, which for those of you unfamiliar with the poem reads as follows:
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.
GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And floundering like a man in fire or lime.--
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.
(For those who do not know any Latin and do not know the poem, the old lie referred to by Owen at the end of the poem is "It is Great and Glorious to die for one's country)
Did the defenders of truth and liberty demand the president explain what he meant by his inexcusable and ignorant lie. Did they demand that John McCain denounce the President for this outrageous misstatement of fact and fiction. They did neither, instead they focused for a month and a half on what the relationship between Senator Obama and his pastor during which time another 77 young American died in Bush's romantic and exciting preemptive misadventure
I a fit of madness I hoped, that after seven years of such stupidity, and in the aftermath of Senator Obama's victory in North Carolina and near victory in Indiana, and given the responses to the exit polls, the press corps would have concluded the public had decided it was time to move on to real issues. And they have.
These wise men of letters have concluded after much soul searching, that the issue now driving the election is can Obama possibly become the President if he can not win the support of the stupid and the ignorant, who have emerged as this years version of the soccer mum.
I do not know about you, but personally, after seven years of a pig ignorant stupid Presidency I feel rather comforted by the knowledge that the stupids in America are not supporting the man who will be president. Perhaps after four years of a blazingly successful Obama Presidency, perhaps they will come to their senses and realize they were stupid to vote for McCain.
