I think Senator Clinton's campaign, and possibly her future political prospects, have been irreparably damaged. If there ever was a time for Senator Obama to take the high road, it is now.
The best possible response to Hillary's RFK remarks would be for Barack to issue a public statement defending her - someting like:
Senator Clinton's remarks about Democratic primaries extending into June have been taken way out of proportion by many in the media. I do not for one minute believe that Hilary harbors any of the negative feelings that have been portrayed. She has long served this country with great honor, has run a spirited campaign, and has been a beacon to millions of people who have long felt disenfranchised.
I'm sure Barack could come up with a statement that is far more articulate. But, for him to come out and defend her at a time when she is being so roundly criticized, is not only the right thing to do, but is a tremendous opportunity to heal the wounds of her many die-hard supporters.
I have always thought that one of Barack's greatest strengths has been his compassion and ability to empathize with those who disagree with him. Now is the perfect opportunity to show this strength, and thus unify the Democratic party.
For Obama supporters who find it difficult to get past the anger and resentment of this hotly contested and prolonged primary campaign, it is very hard to be compassionate. But, doing the right thing at the most difficult time is not only a sign of greatness, but also the smartest political move that could be made.
