OK -- so I am a bit out of the news loop most of the time (at least non-primary news), so imagine my surprise this morning when I was cruising through the sports section only to discover that BOTH the Cubs AND the White Sox were in first place in their respective divisions. Certainly this is an event of incredible import. Maybe right up there with glaciers melting and swamps ablaze and Virginia trending blue.
I moved to Chicago-land when I was in kindergarten. I don't know why - but my dad selected the White Sox as the team he followed - and thus they became my team as well. So I grew up with Nellie Fox, Minnie Minoso and Louis Aparicio, and that grand home run slugger, Sherman Lollar - who smacked an incredible 20 something homers in 1959. It wasn't until years later that I came to understand (and eventually adopt) the long suffering Cubbies.
And since then - one World Championship for the Sox, and several "blown" post-seasons for both teams.
Could this be the year of the "L" series? Take the poll below.
