I want to wish all married couples a happy Loving day. Today is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that declared that it was unconstitutional to ban interracial marriage.
All married people should celebrate this day - Loving Day (what a great coincidence the case name is Loving). I've been married close to 28 years and this case hits close to home. The Lovings fought for the right to live as a married couple.
While mine is not an interracial marriage, it is an interfaith marriage and we fought all kinds of prejudice and grief during our courtship. I cannot imagine what it must have been like to fight the legal system too.
We were the first in our families to marry outside our religions. It was a big deal 30 years ago, believe it or not. It was very difficult to deal with people who were not only not happy about our love, our commitment, our choice but were downright hostile to it. It really effected me deeply.
No one has the right to tell someone who they may love. No one has the right to rob an adult couple of the joy and celebration of their commitment. We all know that marriage is not easy and every couple deserves the support of their families and community to help not hinder their ability to stay committed.
I have helped other younger interfaith and interracial couples deal with the opposition from their families to their marriages. I hope in my lifetime that I will see an end to these obstacles.
So now the fight seems to be passed on to the gay community although a few states recognizing same sex marriage. Hopefully, there will be a Supreme Court case with an equally fitting name to guarantee the rights of same sex couples. I'll be voting for Democratic candidates who support equal rights for all of us. We all deserve a chance at happiness.
Wish all the couples you know Happy Loving Day. Can we make this a national holiday recognizing marriage? I need another excuse to get a card and a present.
