I called the Obama campaign yesterday and asked one of the volunteers if the candidate was going to make a a public statement about the FISA vote that is coming up today in the House.
He told me he did not know but that they had been getting lots of call about this subject.
I told him to pass along the message that I believed it was a critical time for Obama to show leadership on one of the most important issues of our time: the shredding of the 4th Ammendment of the Constitution.
(more after the fold...)
He asked me for my email and told me that they would get back to me soon.
An hour later I got an email from the campaign asking to donate money (boy, that was quick, I was not in Obama's mailing list before).
This morning I got another (canned) email that repeats Obama's previous statements but makes no reference to today's events or if Obama is going to take any public postition on today's vote.
Here it is:
Dear xxx,
Thank you for contacting Obama for America about proposed legislation to give phone companies legal immunity for past wiretapping. Senator Obama has opposed this legislation and stood with Senator Dodd, cosponsoring his amendment to remove this special interest provision from the bill that came before the Senate.
Senator Obama believes strongly in accountability, and when he is President, there will be no more illegal wire-tapping of American citizens; no more national security letters to spy on citizens who are not suspected of a crime; no more tracking citizens who do nothing more than protest a misguided war. Our Constitution works, and so does the FISA court. By working with Congress and respecting our courts, Senator Obama will provide our intelligence and law enforcement agencies with the tools they need to track and take out the terrorists without undermining our Constitution and our freedom.
Thank you again for contacting us.
This does not look much like leadership to me. What do you think?
