Something my grandfather always said, which my father has carried down throughout his life - we've even turned it into a verb...Whenever we want something done, and done NOW we say "LSMS" which means "less shit, more sugar". To this day I still have no idea what fecal material has to do with sugar, but when I hear the call I move - and fast!
Cut to today. I own a retail store in Cincinnati, in one of the "up and coming" areas they call it, we have an amazingly varied demographic. An Obama headquarters just opened down the street from me a few weeks ago (the second in the city so far, although I've heard rumors there will be more). We've had some nice steady traffic from them, and hey I'm a supporter so I love to chat and hear what they have to say.
A young woman comes in and we get to chatting, she's the head of something or other within the new Obama campaign HQ. She moved here from Columbus until election day, and she seems like she's been working A LOT...not by the way she looks or acts, you can just tell...she confesses that she and others in her position have been logging in 80 hour work weeks. OK, I'm a small business owner, I log a lot of hours - but geez, that's a lot and I'm sure that there's no way to compensate her monitarily.
But she believes, and she's working, and she's mobilizing, and she's informing.
She gets me thinking about all of the ways I can help the campaign, but I'm stumped. It's hard to find free time with children and two businesses, hosting a party at our house would mean we'd actually have to clean it (really, this would be a huge sacrifice, you haven't seen my house!).
She pops the idea of having a voter registration box in my store. I really had no idea that I could even do that, wow! So tomorrow I'm going to walk down to Obama HQ and see what I need to make that happen. It's not going to change the world, but it is something.
I'm so tired of reading about all of the crap that's been going on in this election, the negative this and the "media loves him" that...I'm ready to LSMS and do my part to get our man elected.
p.s. first diary here, please be gentle!
