A transplanted Midwesterner puts down roots in Alabama and helps show how "loyal Bushies" have corrupted our justice system.
People around the country, tired of paying almost $4 per gallon for gasoline, probably muttered a few cuss words under their breath when they read recently about ExxonMobil's record profits.
In Alabama, we have reason to fire off a few particularly choice words:
ExxonMobil Should Thank the Alabama Supreme Court
Thanks to the Alabama Supreme Court, ExxonMobil got away with blatant fraud, cheating our state out of most of a $3.6 billion jury verdict--at a time when state agencies are cutting back because of budget shortfalls.
An Alabama jury found that ExxonMobil had intentionally cheated on its contracts for natural-gas royalties. But last fall, the Alabama Supreme Court--which Karl Rove helped turn into a Republican playground in the 1990s--overturned the ruling. It was an 8-1 decision, with the lone dissent coming from Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb, the only Democrat on the court.
Alabama blogger Robby Scott Hill, who has a law degree and is a former employee in the State Lands Division (where the natural-gas contracts where administered) says the GOPers on the Supreme Court violated standard appellate procedure and years of legal precedent in making the decision.
I would add that, considering the U.S. mails almost certainly were used in furtherance of this heist, that the GOP Supremes probably committed a federal crime--honest-services mail fraud.
