I thought, with Labor Day weekend coming up, what better time to share this clip of John McCain?
In this video, Senator McCain verbally attacks a construction worker who dares to question McCain's claim that migrant workers earn $50 per hour picking lettuce.
I can't find any better example of a candidate who is not only out of touch, but completely indifferent to the plight of American workers.
Remember, the people he scolds and mocks in this video are the same people who:
rake hot asphalt in the summertime;
maintain air conditioning systems in attics that can feel over 110 degree on a hot day;
pour concrete all day long while baking in the sun;
and freeze in the winter while they're out repairing busted pipes.
I doubt Senator McCain has much in common with anyone who works with their hands for a living, or he wouldn't be standing up on a stage belittling the people who do that kind of work.
Then again, it's easy to belittle working people, when you can't even keep track of all your houses and your closest economic advisor thinks Americans are "whiners."
I think maybe we should let John McCain know how we feel. Who wants to go to Minnesota and see if he'll hire them for $50 an hour to pick lettuce?
Update: I was in the audience during this exchange. Just so people know, he told this to a group of both native and immigrant workers who were at a union conference.
Update 2: The person who McCain was responding to is Paul Collins, the head of the Sheet Metal Workers' Local in New York. McCain initially stated that Americans would not pick lettuce, not even for $50 an hour. Collins got up to the mic and said "I'll pick lettuce for $50 and hour." McCain for some reason flipped out and went into his tirade.
