Michael Jordan couldn't stay away from the game of Basketball.
Brett Farve couldn't stay away from the football field.
Barry Bonds wants to come back and round the bases once more.
The thrill of existing in the competitive arena in which a person elevates himself to the status of legends is hard to walk away from.
Today, another legendary figure is reported to have returned to their legendary perch for another round. The Sultan of Slander, The Grand Poobah of Puppetry, the man that showed us that treason is not a crime, it's a hobby; Karl Rove is back.
Politico is reporting this morning that Rove is back to involving himself in a campaign beyond his post at Fox News:
Republican strategist Karl Rove called Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) late last week and urged him to contact John McCain to withdraw his name from vice presidential consideration, according to three sources familiar with the conversation.
Lieberman dismissed the request, these sources agreed.
Lieberman "laughed at the suggestion and certainly did not call [McCain] on it," said one source familiar with the details.
"Rove called Lieberman," recounted a second source. "Lieberman told him he would not make that call."
The article goes on to mention that Rove is pushing hard for our beloved Mitt Romney to get the veep spot because he already comes out of the box with batteries. Also of note, Republican mouthpiece Robert Novak won't confirm or deny that Rove is among his sources used for his big comeback article.
The ominous stench of Karl Rove is surrounding the McCain campaign, from the deeply personal attacks converging on Barack Obama, to his loose affiliations with many of McCain's most senior advisors. Going into this GOP convention, McCain has the weight of the entire Bush Administration on his shoulders and today's development certainly doesn't make that burden lighter.
Rove has given Democrats yet another instance where the McCain campaign is just a POW fronted extension of its crime spree. I believe the banned line from Dennis Kucinich's speech yesterday said it best:
"They’re asking for another four years — in a just world, they’d get 10 to 20."
