What are the top five things to watch for in both the US Senate and House, when they return from recess on Sept 8th? A wounded animal is the most dangerous, and we need to be vigilant of what the Bush Administration might try to pull in its waning months.
I'm sure Kagro X will resume the "Today In Congress" stories once they are back. This is just a chance for us to get a look ahead, to keep abreast of (and quickly reply to) events on the Hill when the agenda is first set, on Day One.
I'll update this with a list, linked to and with a big hat-tip for all constructive comments (including links to good run-downs of the agenda on both sides of the aisle, etc.). Prioritized lists of top five items are helpful, because it forces us to recognize not everything can be achieved at once, that there are trade-offs in time, effort, and funding.
With November elections just two months away, my over-riding goal is to keep a Democratic majority in the House and (especially) Senate (where no-one wants Joe Lie-berman to play a pivotal swing role any longer). [Go, Hagan!] So this is not the time, for example, to launch war-crimes investigations.
Thanks in advance!
