please please please forgive me for posting a dairy that may not have enough content to actually qualify as a diary, but my threadbare nervous system and my increasingly unmanageable sense of outrage prevents me from exercising a more community-considerate judgement. in exchange for your pardoning me this once, i am totally prepared to be either your best friend or your slave for a week, your choice. hear me out...
i have been heartened by the wonderful 'new-voter' registration numbers that have been reported lately for the democratic party; especially as that big, bad, blustery storm (hurricane sarah) blows chill wind from the north. in my mind's eye, i've pictured battalions of hard working campus recruiters across the country deftly assembling formidable armies of earnest co-ed's who march in unison on november 4th, with resolve and joy, to carry the day. and this may well be the case...
but, i have been horrified - absolutely horrified - to discover over the last few days that people i know and consider admirable; people who are every bit likely to strike up a political conversation and impress you with an informed opinion; people who hold responsible positions within our community, professional people; people who are my peers (50-ish); people who are entirely inclined, by virtue of their wit and political sympathies, to support senators obama and biden; and people who otherwise don't appear even the slightest bit mentally defective, are themselves not registered to vote!!!!
w.t.f'ity.f.?
i'm no statistician, but if this limited sample taken out of my own small life is any indication, there are millions and millions of these fools.
the silver lining here is that they seem perfectly amenable to signing their name, if i make it ridiculously easy, by bringing them the form and a stamped, addressed envelop. this i will do as i have absolutly nothing better to do in the next 58 days.
people, don't judge your books by their covers! not now, not this time. ask your friends and acquaintances if they're registered to vote and, if not, ask if you can help them to register. i think you'll be surprised.
