The media has been ecstatically throwing out poll numbers of late, concluding that independents and women are flocking to McCain in droves. NBC and ABC have been reporting a swing of white women of 20 percentage points. Why then is Obama still dead even with McCain in the polls? McCain was four points up on Obama after he came back from Germany.
Interestingly, when Obama is leading by one or two points, the spin by the media is that the race is a 'dead heat' and 'within the margin of error.' When McCain is up, he is 'leading in the polls' and 'surging.'
The media is using the volatility in the race to drive up ratings. While they are trying to gin up a race, there has been no effort to examine several key issues concerning Palin such as her billing expenses to the state of Alaska. All the networks are avidly poll watching and not parsing out burning issues that should be addressed. How can McCain have a convention bounce when he is still in a dead heat with Barack like he was several weeks ago? Is the media storyline real or is it a hoax?
It's also interesting that nobody is demanding 'specifics' from Palin. Everyone is falling over themselves to push the storyline that she is 'just like one of us. She didn't go to Harvard. She is not an elitist'
Barack was been hammered on experience and specifics for months now. No matter how many times he delves into his tax proposals and his economic agenda, he is never detailed enough. The bar has clearly been set much higher for Barack, while Palin just needs to show up from the middle of nowhere and throw out punchlines. I wonder why?
