More and more, it seems like ads and PR blasts by the McCain campaign promote falsehoods and distortions that make me wonder, have they no sense of honor? I'm sure that they are cognizant of what they're doing.
Which leads to the question, where has honor gone in our society?
I remember it. . .
When I was a kid and another kid told you something that didn't seem credible, all he had to say to assure you that it was true was to say, "On my honor." The code was such, even with children, that invoking one's honor was something that was done, well, with honor. You just didn't lie when you swore by your honor.
There are many anecdotes of troops in WWII, from both sides, dealing with each other honorably, respectfully. My experience with honor as a child closely followed that era.
Senator Obama has brought a sense of honor back to politics while the McCain campaign's soul is, apparently, dead in this area. But that doesn't mean that most Americans don't understand or appreciate honor. I think we do.
And I think it would serve all of us for Obama to call them on it. After all, Senator McCain's voice appears on all of these spurious commercials saying that he approves of the message.
I.e., he approves of dishonorable behavior such as the recent distortion that suggests that Obama is for sex education to kindergartners.
Obama, please craft a commercial that directly addresses the McCain campaign on its practices of dishonorable communications, of lies, of nasty (but well understood) innuendo. It would be fair to point out some of the lies, and that McCain approves of them, and then to challenge Senator McCain to lift his messages out of the muck and deal with character and issues with honor. With truth.
Please.
