Hi, this is a research diary, looking for anyone else who is having the same problems with Digg that I am.
It seems that Digg does not like (I won't say "Digg does not dig," sorry) my using Firefox on a Windows XP platform, with Service Pack 3. I am able to get on fine with IE, but that is not my default browser, and I prefer to stick with Firefox, thanks.
First, Digg wouldn't let me join, by not providing a semi-obscured letter/number image for me to interpret and answer for the question, "Are you Human?" Digg wouldn't provide a alphanumeric image on the "Bug report" page, either, and so finally I had to join on IE in order to Digg up an anti-Mcain video, and to make my complaint.
Having created an account, I cannot log onto it from Firefox. Whenever I go to a Digg page and click on "Digg it" it asks me to log in. I try to, but it just returns me to the original page, and I'm still un-logged-in.
I have set to accept all cookies, I have cleared my cache, removed almost all plug-ins, and have disabled the Google configuration plug-in (I don't want to remove that), and there are no other plug-ins.
The tech helper at Digg has suggested the following, which for the reasons indicated I can't do:
Disable all scripts: I don't think I have any. I never installed or loaded any, and there seems to be no way of checking to see if any are there. By that I mean I've gone through every tool and option screen on Firefox and found nothing about scripts.
Turn off extensions/run in "Safe Mode": Again, I do not know of any extensions connected to Firefox, same answer as above; no tool or screen to detect or turn any off. As for "Safe mode," it sounds like the tech guy is asking me to run my whole computer in safe mode, which seems like a lot to ask for this problem. I'm not going to do that just yet.
I try my dangdest to not install any silly or superfluous options on my computer, browser or system. I keep a neat computer, and am reluctant to admit that the problem is on my end.
Can anyone tell me where I might be wrong?
Is anyone else out there having this problem?
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Digg is, I believe, an important tool for promulgating news, videos and other information to the general public. Some here have argued extensively for its use. For these reasons I am posting this diary here on DKos.
Please reply if you have some input, or especially if you are experiencing similar problems on any platform.
