Our side got rather excited yesterday at the InstaFlipFlop yesterday from McCain, in which he channeled the ghost of Herbert Hoover and revealed just how closely he and his buddy George W. Bush share the Vulcan mindmeld that is Republicanspeak.
"The fundamentals of our economy are strong," he said.
Of course later he rather clumsily retracted that statement, which attracted most of the light and heat. There's a juicy ad waiting to be made, reminiscent of a certain senator in a certain wetsuit, windsurfing this way and then that.
But the real money quote is what he said next. See below the fold.
...and I promise you, WE WILL NEVER PUT AMERICA IN THIS POSITION AGAIN.
That's all you need. There it is, right there. If the Obama campaign has been seeking McCain's "I was for it before I was against it," there it is.
WE WILL NEVER PUT AMERICA IN THIS POSITION AGAIN.
So, you open the ad with a picture of the markets plummeting.
Depositors lined up trying to take their money out of failed banks.
Headlines of disaster on Wall Street.
McCain: "And I promise you, we will never put America in this position again."
Voiceover: "Even John McCain knows he and his party are responsible for America's economic crisis. Vote for change. Vote for the future. Vote for Obama."
Update: Thanks so much to everyone who is rec'ing this diary. Let's get the word out there. And re-edited to remove an unintentionally offensive phrase from my comedic descriptions of our Dear Leader.
Update II: A couple of people have mentioned that Tweety apparently sang about this line yesterday... Here is the link! Way to go, Tweety!
Update III: A few people have said the quote is a slip, a semantic mistake, because it is plain that McCain MEANT to say something like "I promise you, we will see that America is never put in this position again." But, MY FRIENDS, that is not what he happened to say. And I say if they can hoist Dean on a "scream," McCain's own words are fair game. I think he inadvertently spoke the truth.
Update IV: Just riffin' here: Maybe that last line of the ad should be "Help John McCain keep his promise. Don't let them put us in this position again. Vote for hope. Vote for the future. Vote for Obama."
