ok, ya'll, this thing is off the front page & never hit the rec list, so keep yakking if ya want & next time something "breaks" someone will throw a new diary up.
per Matthews:
Obama will hold a presser with his campaign press corp at the Mayflower Hotel.
1st comments from White House bail Out Summit
There's no deal & Sen Richard Shelby (R-AL) says he's no longer welcome in the White House. Richard Shelby quotes major economists who say deal is flawed & must be rethought. This is the 1st statement released from White House meeting. Is this setting the stage for true populism or a trojan horse opening for more brinksmanship from McCain?
Shelby didn't sound light hearted. He sounded pretty discouraged.
My rough paraphrase from memory:
I brought 5 pages from our best economists who have contacted us to say this plan is flawed. Harvard, MIT, (etc) economists (he gave no names) who say our economy in bad shape but this plan will not help. I brought these 5 pages up in here. Need less to say, I am probably not welcome here again.
Q: What was the tenor of the meeting, the Senators?
Senator McCain & Obama were Senators & used their office to be polite & very cordial. (Again this is a rough paraphrase)
Q: What about the deal Senator Dodd announced this morning?
There is no deal.
Chris Matthews & Wolf Blitzer are in go mode covering the fall out.
the live feed stake out has ended & the press pools are spreading out to get statements.
Looks like we'll here from principle participants intime.
I can keep bringing forward links & other info from the comments as they come & we can use this as a "breaking" diary for a while if y'all like...
