That's right, McCain, the POW, is a wimp. He's afraid to confront Obama directly. For days, he has attacked Obama viciously on the stump, while his paid ads took an even nastier turn and his little pit bull took political hate speech to a level we haven's seen since George Wallace was around. McCain even promised that last night we'd see the gloves come off. Everyone was prepared to hear all about Ayers and Wright and how scary and risky Obama was. Yet in the end, all we got was "that one"? Chalk it up to the arena or McCain's latent civility. Me, I think it's because he's a wimp, or to be more accurate, a classic bully. I also think there's a winning Obama strategy in pointing this out.
Look at what McCain is doing today. His campaign has released a statement from a person whose house was bombed by the Weathermen in 1970 that attacks Obama for being "friends" with a terrorist. This is a dramatic escalation from even Palin's inflammatory rhetoric.

Why didn't we hear any of this last night? Why when faced with an opportunity to tell Obama to his face that he's a terrorist sympathizer, McCain could only bring up lame, already-debunked attacks on taxes? Is John McCain afraid to face Obama?
If I'm the Obama campaign, I'd consider making a point of this. Attack McCain for spewing outrageous lies on the campaign trail (and getting a woman to do the heavy lifting), but wimping out face-to-face. This could do two things: First, it makes McCain look weak, like a classic bully who can only strike if he can't be seriously challenged. Given opportunity to hit Obama hard on this, he blinked. Second, if it becomes something of a refrain, it raises the stakes for McCain for next week's debate. Either McCain goes for the jugular (which independents have recoiled from) or he's a pathetic weakling who can't directly confront Obama. I think it's win-win, a good way to shove McCain into a box from which there's no escape. Taunt the old bully. Make him crack.
