Since Joe Biden is getting a lot of flak for his recent comments, I think it's worth pointing out a new video from Women for Obama about Biden's legislation on violence against women. I consider domestic violence to be a national crisis that has festered for years, and voters should know that our VP candidate showed leadership on this issue, while John McCain voted against the legislation.
Apologies for lack of a transcript--there is a brief summary above the clip.
The video below is very powerful and very personal. I apologize for not having a transcript, but it's about six minutes long. In the video, a young woman from Texas named Chelsie Wilson tells her story of how her high school sweetheart began to abuse her after she moved in with him and had a son. The violence escalated until finally he shot her in 2006. It was thanks to the Violence Against Women Act that her ex is behind bars for as long as he is. The video also includes an interview with Bonnie Campbell, Former Director of the Office on Violence Against Women, who speaks about working with Joe Biden and his passion and commitment (I think it's crucial that she points out that it wasn't until Clinton was in the White House that the bill passed). Also interspersed in the video are clips of Obama introducing Biden and speaking about his authorship of the legislation. The end shows Chelsie talking about how she can now watch her son grow up safe (it also shows her volunteering at an Obama office).
Since the media coverage has been so Palin-centric and has only seemed to focus on Biden when he makes a "gaffe," it's possible that there are still undecided voters out there who don't know that Joe Biden authored the Violence Against Women Act and still just think of him as another old Washington senator. I hope you'll watch and pass this on to any undecided women you know, as I think it's a powerful and moving testament to the experience, seriousness, and passion that Obama and Biden bring to the issues that affect people's daily lives.
