The SBOE in NC has just decided that all polling locations will stay open until 5pm on Saturday Nov 1st. The original close time for most polls was 1pm. This is the link to the WRAL story..
In an emergency meeting Thursday, the board unanimously agreed to extend Saturday early voting hours to 5 p.m. The meeting came after Mecklenburg and Guilford counties sought permission to keep the sites from closing at 1 p.m. as scheduled.
The polls can close before 5pm if the county board unanimously votes that the extended hours are not necessary. It is not clear if that vote would occur Saturday or before then. Mecklenburg is home to Charlotte and Guilford is home to Greensboro.
According to WRAL:
More than 1.7 million people – or 30 percent of registered voters – cast a ballot at one-stop sites through Wednesday night.
This is obviously great news! I hope that the record turn out in NC continues. Of course, this will increase the work that the Obama Campaign has to do on Saturday night to find those last hold out voters...but it may very well make Nov 4th easier for canvassers!
