LINES IN NY ARE LONG, AND I KNOW WHY AND HOW TO STOP THIS:
After voting just now in NY State, it seems obvious to me why the lines are so long. Since we in NY do not receive sample ballots, many did not realize that there was a vote on an amendment for veterans on the ballot today.
This is causing the voting time per voter to rise from approximately 1-2 minutes per voter, to closer to 4-5 minutes per voter.
You can help to easily move the process along by helping to do this ONE easy thing when you go and vote.
At you polling place, there should be a stack of sample ballot for people to review. They are often in some obscure place, or people don't utilize them because they think they know what is on the ballot. If you don't see this stack of fifteen to thirty sample ballot, ask you poll worker where these are.
Get a stack of ten to fifteen and start passing them out to the people in line. Sample of what to say below the fold:
Here's my pitch:
"Hi. Here's a sample ballot for you to review while you are waiting in line. Let me call your attention to the Amendment item here at the bottom. This is the one that seems to be slowing most folks down, so why don't you take a moment to review it. That way, when you get into the booth, you will be all ready and we can keep moving this democracy thing right along and give as many people a chance to participate today as possible. You can take this into the booth with you if you want, and after you are finished with it, if you could please give it to someone else in line and tell them what it is, that would be great. Thanks.
The lines in NY, where there are RARELY lines, are not a good thing. This may be happening in other states for the same reason. If it is, I recommend that you avail yourselves of this same option. YOU TOO, CAN HAND OUT SAMPLE BALLOTS TO THE FOLKS IN THE FRONT OF THE LINE AND HELP THINGS MOVE ALONG. Just don't do anything DUMB, like talk about politics. If a poll worker approaches you, politely ask them to please assist you in performing this public service task.
If you want to know what the Amendment is, it's to help people who have served in the military and have been determined to be disabled, to receive the rest of their disability benefits while they are waiting for their first payment to be processed. The way things stand right now, people can't claim their points towards civil service, et cetera, until they receive their first disability payment. This will allow them to get benefits as soon as they are given the disability determination.
[FYI, and IMHO, the reason why the military is making people wait until they get their first payment, is to force them to agree to a lower percentage of disability, just so they can get the rest of their benefits. It's extortion, and this amendment helps put an end to government extortion of our veterans.]
E-MAIL THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO IS VOTING IN NY, SO THEY CAN HELP WITH SAMPLE BALLOTS AT THEIR POLLING PLACE.
**Please recommend this so it can move to the list and more NY voters can see this**
