If we really want to say death to supply side bailouts which is what the financial bailout was we need to FDR the bailout of the automakers. Don't give money to them directly, give money to the many many federal agencies that need new autos. Like the Forest Service, the Park Service, the BLM. Require cars bought from GM or Ford and get rid of the "bid" process for this emergency.
So I don't know enough about federal procurement rules and what it would take to get money to the departments. Is this something that would be possible?
Could it be done on a grant basis for states to make state car purchases?
Also what other agencies would need regular cars instead of the SUV or pickups that my picks of the Dept of the Interior would more likely use?
Let's put them on a credit card. $30,000 per office, go buy a car.
This would multiply the impact of our tax dollars. Money to the dealer, money to the salesman, money to the car manufacturer. And money floating around everywhere in the town of the purchase which leads to home mortgages being paid, food being purchased, and banks with money to lend.
If we are serious about this New Deal let's look at how we spread the weath in our bailout plans too.
