As we are well aware the MSM in the US should be shot for their superficial coverage of election 2008. But not all of the media should be given that privilege. I believe that there is one news magazine that has stood head and shoulders above all others in the coverage of the election. This magazine is based in London, and it is called the Economist.
Sine they are an overseas member of the media they do not fall for the spin that so many of the US based MSM fall victim to. The Lexington column is a prime example of this. In the latest edition they have an article entitled "Political Parties Die From the Head Down" They don’t pull any punches. Here are some of the money quotes:
The title of the "stupid party" now...belongs to the Repulicans.
There are any number of reasons for the Republican Party’s defeat on November 4th. But high on the list is the fact that the party lost the battle for brains
The Republicans lost the battle of ideas even more comprehensively than they lost the battle for educated votes, marching into the election armed with nothing more than slogans
Republicanism’s anti-intellectual turn is devastating for its future.
Another reason is the degeneracy of the conservative intelligentsia itself, a modern-day version of the 1970s liberals it arose to do battle with: trapped in an ideological cocoon, defined by its outer fringes, ruled by dynasties and incapable of adjusting to a changed world.
How likely is it that the Republican Party will come to its senses? ... the odds in favor of an imminent renaissance look long. Many conservatives continue to think they lost because they were not conservative or populist enough.
...too many Republicans are still refusing to acknowledge that idiocy has consequences, too.
This is a snark fuilled rant of truth that I would highly recommed that you read in full. Here is the address of the article.
