There was a diary a few days ago about Canada's two liberal parties forming a coalition government in Parliament. Well today conservative Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has asked Governor General Michelle Jean who represents the Queen of England to allow him to shut down the parliament until January 26, 2009 while he works on a "economic stimulus plan"
Less than two months after winning re-election, Harper successfully asked the unelected representative of the head of state for the power to close down Parliament until Jan. 26, hoping to buy enough time to develop a stimulus package that could prop up the economy.
This is nothing more than a desperate attempt by Harper to cling on to power, because he was sure to lose in Monday's no confidence vote. The Leader of the New Democratic Party Jack Layton sees through the Prime Minister's desperate shenanigans.
"He's trying to lock the door of Parliament so that the elected people cannot speak," Layton said. "He's trying to save his job."
Although the Conservatives won the October 14th election, it strengthened the minority power in parliament. The Liberals, the New Democratic Party and Bloc Quebecois control the majority of the 308 seats in the parliament and signed a pact agreeing to vote this Monday to oust Harper and form a coalition government in Parliament.
I don't know what the Prime Minister is thinking but all this does is delay his party's pending defeat once parliam reconvenes in January.
Oh Canadian politics you gotta love it.
