I was just sitting outside, here in Raleigh, NC, where we are getting our second, though small (compared to the rest of the country), snow. I grew up in the Twin Cities in Minnesota so snow should be no new thing. But after living in Northern California for 5 years and now, here in NC for the past ten years, snow is a rarity. And the snow, here and now, is kicking in some wonderful memories.
As a kid in Minnesota, when a snow emergency hit, a foot of snow was the norm for school buses to come out early and for "snow day" to be declared. We all got home safe, albeit late.
After home was when the fun began. Sleds and toboggans came out and the games were ready! We used to go to a golf course (much useless in a snow storm) nearby and have a blast loading as many as we could carry and sailing down the snowy slopes. Yes, a few injuries were incurred but it never seemed to doom the joy of a sled/toboggan ride down the hill.
There have been times in weeks of late that I've wondered if we don't need the courage we had when we were young on the sleds. It is all about courage and the need to explore the unknown.
Not sure why, but sledding in the new snow seemed a good metaphor for what we face now.
COURAGE, ANYONE?
