ProgressiveSouth diaried this earlier today: BREAKING: Supremes hear BIG challenge to Voting Rights Act but it slipped by with only 38 comments.
It has been suggested by some of those conservatives who want to dismantle the hard won Voting Rights Act, that Barack Obama's election has proven that we no longer need to protect minorities from being disenfranchised.
This is bullshit.
Yo' Kossacks - wake up!
Where's the outrage?
The TM is covering this but I'm stunned that this just scrolled on by, here where it should have been a major story.
My friends died for this act. We went to jail to get this enacted. And just cause our new POTUS is black hasn't changed a damn thing in the south(and not just the south) in terms of blatant attempts (many successful) to rob people of color or those with Spanish surnames of their rights to cast a ballot.
No need for me to reprint what ProgressiveSouth put up earlier today. Here are links to some of the news coverage:
USA Today: Justice Kennedy: Voting Rights Act might now be unfair
LA Times:Voting Rights Act section that singles out South may be abolished
National Law Journal: High court questions legality of Voting Rights Act
Reuters: Supreme Court conservatives criticize voting rights law
Last week the justices considered whether race still can be used as a factor for job promotions and hirings, an issue that could affect millions of employers nationwide.
Opponents of the voting rights law argue that the protections for minority voters are no longer needed after more than 40 years of progress, and they cite Obama's election as evidence of how America has changed since 1965.
The Civil Rights battle in this country continues. We did not overcome with Barack's election.
It's really ironic that this is the Supreme's gift to Barack on his 100th day.
Let's move on this folks.
