As you know, today Gov. John Baldacci of Maine signed L.D. 1020, An Act To End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom. This law removes all reference to gender in Maine's statues regarding marriage - there are hundreds of laws that this will affect.
But L.D. 1020 doesn't take affect until 90 days after the end of this legislative session, will fall after this November's elections. It is almost certain that opponents of equal marriage will gather enough signatures to place a "people's veto" on the ballot, joining three other initiatives dear to conservatives that are already there: TABOR II, a partial repeal of the vehicle excise tax, and a full repeal of the much hated school consolidation law.
Action needs to be taken now, and you can help by donating to the group that has led the fight for same-sex marriage here: Equality Maine. I know times are tight, but any amount you can give will go a long way. Opponents will have deep pockets from which to draw, and enjoy cross over from the other initiatives.
SO PLEASE DONATE WHAT YOU CAN TODAY. Thank you.
