As I was taking my daily look at Politico scanning for some juicy article to read, I stumbled across a headline that made me think I was reading The Onion. Upon closer examination, it appears to be true. I am utterly amazed at how incredibly stupid republicans can be. Wow. Anyways, we find out today that:
when the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the "Democrat Socialist Party."
Really? REALLY? Obama, Pelosi, Reid? They are NOT socialists. At all. In any honest interpretation of the word. Not to mention the farcical saga that the the republicans are living. They can't even successfully re-brand their OWN party, let alone the Democrats.
But this also got me thinking, why can't we be socialist? In fact, socialism is more popular than the republican party right now. This makes me very happy.
More below the fold
Perhaps with the troubles we have seen in the way corporations have harmed us under the capitalist system it is time to consider an alternative. I see no reason why we should dismiss socialism offhandedly as too radical or just a gateway to totalitarian communism. Many republicans (and some Democrats) have not yet noticed that the Cold War is over. In fact, among those of us under 30, who came of age outside of the Cold War context, there are almost equal numbers favoring socialism and capitalism.
Instead of intending this diary to expound all of the benefits of socialism, I would rather just bring it in to the realm of mainstream political discourse. One thought that that has crossed my mind lately is that maybe the republicans aren't as foolish as they appear. It seems possible that by using "socialist" as an insult it may keep it outside of the limits of acceptable political ideology.
