Health Care for America Now lists members of Congress that have endorsed a set of core principles supporting a viable public option in crafting legislation for National Health Care Reform. To date, 20 Senators and 174 Representatives (along with two former Senators named Obama and Biden) are signatories.

Daily Kos diarist mcjoan has provided excellent reporting and commentary on the National Health Care Legislation issue and is highly recommended by this humble diarist.

It’s time to change the number of Congressional Representatives signing onto the HCAN principles thanks to North Carolina's Rep. David Price of our 4th Congressional District.

Rep. David Price Townhall June 13, 2009 Durham, NC

More below the fold.

Health Care For America Now (HCAN) sponsored a Town Hall meeting this morning in a downtown Durham church for Representative Price. Co-sponsored by local groups including, Durham Acorn, Durham Chapter of NAACP, Durham For Obama, Orange County Campaign for Change, and the People’s Alliance, more than 250 people showed up and filled the sanctuary to participate.

Passionate is perhaps too mild a word to describe the feelings expressed by panelists and members of the audience supporting both a single payer system and a public option in crafting health care legislation. Everybody choked up and/or shed tears when panelist Rhonda Robinson shared her story and her feelings about having to ration her medications because of a lack of funds to purchase them. It was clear that Representative Price was deeply moved as well.

After a discussion of political realities and what we can do locally to create change, Representative Price signed the HCAN principles of reform to the applause of the audience. Your intrepid diarist was not going to let that moment pass without capturing it. (Click to enlarge)

Rep. Price and HCAN Principles

A planning meeting ensued after the Town Hall meeting at a nearby coffee shop. We all agreed to ask our Senator Hagan to sign on to the HCAN principles as well as assist efforts with other representatives in North Carolina.

Perhaps others reading this will be likewise inspired.

Thanks for reading this and please share with others if you are so inclined.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

Health Care = Strong National Defense!

Public health care is a national defense issue. By providing health care to all, we insure that in our hour of need we have strong healthy women & men that are ready to protect our country. Framing health care around strong national defense should have full support from all sides.

A big topic in the Town Hall was that Small Businesses are crippled by not only rising health care costs (if they can be provided at all), but that it's next to impossible to recruit new employees that have pre-existing conditions because then everybody in the business pool's premiums go up.

It's time to fix this! (imho)

      •  I lost my last job after years of stellar reviews (0+ / 0-)

after I got sick, (a manageable chronic illness) and that basically seems to have destroyed my career. I am reluctant to support public option because I am afraid that it doesn't manage costs enough. I'm afraid that people like me with even fairly simple chronic health conditions will get left out of any solution because of the desire to preserve the insurance companies that public option seems to be based upon.

Seeing that Jim Cooper is behind it gives me pause, as he seems to represent the forces who don't want health care reform, not the ones who do.

It's impossible for a health plan that coveres everybody to be revenue neutral - Schumer wants that money for Wall Street, Cooper (and he says, Obama) are Blue Dog Democrats who want to prevent any "new entitlements".

Cooper has for a very long time been associated with preventing functional health reform. He is the actual author of Obama's plan, he was also the author of "Clinton-lite" in 1993.

The media seems to be intentionally ignoring the many problems with "public option" as well as the Cooper connection. That is a bad, bad sign, as its what happened in 1993 as well.

People in this nation die due to lack of health care. The estimates vary from 18,000 to 100,000 a year, depending on how you measure preventable deaths

that healthcare reform will either fall flat completely, or we will get a corporate plan that coercivly forces people to buy into private plans.

We cannot have real reform with a good robust medicare-like public plan open to everyone and anyone.

One presenter at the Town Hall outlined the price that small business pays in our healthcare system.  Rep. Price encouraged us to engage small business people in our push for healthcare reform.  The current healthcare system is bad for small business, which is the backbone of ou ecomomy.  Engage your local Chamber of Commerce!

  •  My worries about a Bad Plan.. (0+ / 0-)

What is HCAN's position on Single Payer? I'm worried that the extremely vague 'public option' is designed to fail..that it may turn out to be a trap because of its inability to do cost control and this clearly impossible "self-sustaining" requirement, I'm worried that it may end up being destroyed by adverse selection and its insurance death spiral effect.

I'm worried that by not pushing for single payer, Democrats may be opening themselves to a form of blackmail because the numbers don't add up for public option.

I'm worried about the history of public option, and its author.
