A caller on Thom Hartman today said that his army commander told him, "We can sing together, but we can't all shout together." That got me thinking about another strategy for screamers at town hall meetings.

Before the meeting starts find a few fellow constituents who will start up singing anytime someone gets out of control with their boos and jeers and wacko nonsense.

I think if you start singing "God Bless America" others not in on the plan will join in with you. Certainly the righties won't want to appear unpatriotic by refusing to sing such a beloved American song, so they'll be torn and most likely start singing as well.

God Bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

It's short and sweet and will allow for the Representative to get control of the meeting again.

It would be nice if in the end we could have some harmony in all senses of the word as well.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can't shout in sync.  That's what the commander means by "together".  Of course, you can shout all at the same time, but that's not quite the same as doing it "together".  I mean, synchonization is what a military is all about, eh?  :-/  You could argue that you at least have to have some form of common parameter around which things are organized (like, say, rhythm) to make it count as something done "together".

  •  I think "America the Beautiful" would be better. (0+ / 0-)

At first I thought singing would be stupid and distracting. But after seeing how lame and persistent the screamers are, a full song rendition IS warranted.
America the Beautiful I think is better suited.
It calms the soul and inspires the spirit, even for those who may not want to be singing about God. God Bless America is too much like a march. America the Beautiful is a more compassion inducing melody.

      O beautiful for spacious skies,
      For amber waves of grain,
      For purple mountain majesties
      Above the fruited plain!
      America! America!

And crown thy good with brotherhood
