I think it’s fantastic the way this community – and people all over the nation -- responded to Joe Wilson’s indecorous behavior by beefing up the backing for his opponent. That shows the power of even off-year fundraising for elections and the power the netroots have to influence the course of a single campaign, indeed, a person’s career.
ActBlue doesn’t just show results for Congressional campaigns, though. And while the main body of Congressional campaigns is nearly a year away, there are campaigns happening RIGHT NOW which need your help. You can reach out and influence the course of policy for thousands of people who very much need to secure a safe future for those families.
Remember Proposition 8 last year? The haters won, remember? They’re now emboldened by that victory. The bigot brigade doesn’t let up, and LGBT families’ civil rights and protections are on the ballot once again this fall – this time in Maine and Washington. People will vote on our civil rights in 49 days. That’s right – just 7 weeks. We need to show the haters that they won’t win forever. They can’t take away marriage equality in Maine, or domestic partnerships in Washington state, or ANYwhere. And we need to show them that it stops THIS YEAR.
Imagine what that donation would mean to families in Maine -- to couples like Ron and Doug, who recently celebrated 40 years committed to one another, and who would like to marry in their beloved Maine:
Imagine would that would mean to families in Washington, who are facing a civil rights vote of their own in 49 days. This includes senior citizens, who under Washington’s new domestic partnership law can obtain the security of all the rights and responsibilities of marriage without compromising their financial security by marrying and losing social security and pension benefits they have as survivors.
This isn’t something that’s coming up next year. It’s in seven weeks. If you donated to Rob Miller on ActBlue, please consider putting in even a fraction of what you did for him into Maine or Washington to help knock the hate machine on its glutes and secure civil rights for LGBT folks in two important corners of our nation. In an off-year election such as this, turnout is key, and these campaigns need every cent to work their ground game to identify supporters and get out the vote.
We celebrate the passage of Maine’s marriage equality law and Washington state’s domestic partnership law. Please help us keep those laws on the books.
You can donate to No On 1/Protect Maine Equality on ActBlue. If you want to give our DKos community credit for standing up to hate, there is an Orange to Blue page for No On 1 here. You'll be keeping ads like this up on the air:
You can donate to Washington Families Standing Together/Approve Referendum 71 here.
Or, if you’d like to volunteer for either campaign, please connect with them online – No On 1 is hosting volunteers during October doing volunteer vacations, if you feel you have the time to work directly for civil rights in Maine. Washington Families Standing Together needs your help phonebanking and speaking with voters, too!
Thank you for considering helping us secure equality for all. And don't forget to tip ActBlue whenever you donate.
