So, today I wanted to bring you guys some news links for stories that you may not have seen or that may have fallen off of the radar. As always, please feel free to link to other stories or diaries in the comments.
BTW, happy gay history month!
A lot of attention is being paid to the ballot initiative to overturn marriage equality in Maine (and rightly so), but did you know that Illinois and DC have just had marriage bills introduced? See here and here.
While divorce law is denied to same-sex couples in my home state and Indiana, it looks like a judge in Texas is laying the groundwork for divorce for same-sex couples and for overturning the marriage amendment.
And in the world of what is pissing Kat off this week...the Catholic church has sunk to new levels...apparently, the child abuse scandal is not just a Catholic problem, and oh, it was caused by gay men according to Archbishop Silvano Tomasi. Thank you, Archbishop, for reminding me why I left the Catholic church as soon as I left home.
Good news is also coming from New York where Mayor Bloomberg has declared that marriage equality is priority number 1....now if only we could convince the US House and Senate to throw a little time at the issue...
I read this article earlier in the week and was pleasantly surprised to see that coming out is becoming less traumatic for some. Here's hoping that this type of coming-out experience becomes the norm.
And in other happy news, the (gay) authors of the Daddy Penguins have just had a baby! It still amazes me that people want to ban this book...
And in news that makes me "cautiously optomistic"....Nate Silver is projecting that tha Maine marriage initiative will fail!
Finally, for those of you who don't know, Othniel- a frequent contributor to this series and front pager at Street Prophets- is in the hospital today and could probably use some good thoughts. Please feel free to use the comment section to express your well-wishes.
