The conventional wisdom is that Democrats are depressed and that we will not show up at the polls to vote. I am deeply disappointed in some of the outcomes regarding how policy has been shaping up over this last year. However, I am not so depressed that after 1 year of the Barack Obama administration that I am going to hand back over the reigns of power to those who created these messes in the first place. It's a shitty time to be President and with all (my perceived) the President's faults he is still the one I'd want to be in charge. There are some pretty big problems that still need to be addressed in the next few years. If we progressive think by not showing up to vote we are hurting the Demoratic Party I'd beg to differ. They have lobbyist money to fall back on....what do we have? We must continue to fight or the United States as we know it or it will be no more (for the already shrinking middle class). It will no longer be for those looking for an opportunity.
We've got to go out and support the best progressive there are out there during the Democratic primaries. When it is over we've got to come together (unless it's Nelson, Landrieu,or Baucus-those individuals are just too much for me to support). I mean when the Washington Post (the freakin' Washington Post??) puts out an article like this:
There has been zero net job creation since December 1999. No previous decade going back to the 1940s had job growth of less than 20 percent. Economic output rose at its slowest rate of any decade since the 1930s as well.
then you know it is probably much much worse link and who was in charge during that time? 7 of those 10 years it was the Republicans.
And, if you think special interests are killing this country now then what happens when the Supreme Court gives Corporations unlimited spending power link?
In a ruling expected this week, the Supreme Court is set to strip restrictions on election spending, some of which have been in place since Watergate. If the Court rules as experts believe it will, corporations, unions and other interest groups will be allowed to spend virtually unlimited sums of money in political campaigns and on political advertising.
No...taking our ball and going home is not an option. We must be more diligent than ever. We must talk to our friends, family, co-workers. We've got to get involved in our local politics, phone bank, door-knock, and whatever else we can do to get the best progressives we can find elected. Most of all we need to SHOW UP!! Otherwise, President Obama will not advance ANY other legislation in the next 3 years!!!
