My ongoing dual mission as North Carolina's elected Insurance Commissioner is to protect consumers and to ensure a solvent and competitive marketplace.
In that role, the consumer protections provided by and through state-based regulation are stressed by me daily.
However, key to the regulatory process is a better-educated populace regarding what the honest and actual reform specifics are.
When Americans have a better understanding of key components of the Democratic Party's proposed health insurance reform legislation, instead of just being yelled at and frightened by neocons and Tea Party "pander-bears" and rightwing pundits, then they are more likely to support most of the reforms.
The above statement is based on this recent article and poll by Newsweek.
In sum, the article asserts that Americans - when made aware of the details of proposed health insurance reforms - show significant support for most individual pieces of the package.
This finding is quite intriguing when many of those same persons, before they are educated about the components, are fire-hot opposed to the reform package as a whole.
Apparently, the Tea Party folks and some insurance corporate types and some Republicans (those who'll vote for anything that builds up corporate persons while tearing down actual breathing persons) have won the battle over handling public relations on this issue ... but not the war, whose outcome is yet to be determined. Stay tuned.
The bottom line is this: When it comes to protecting consumers, regardless of where one stands on the legislation itself, let's make sure that consumers receive an honest education about what the actual proposals are and what they mean.
