Just a little background on Stupak. I live in Stupak's district and have known him for 20+ years. I've never really liked him. He and his wife have always had a "holier then thou" attitude. Sort of like their shit doesn't stink. His wife was even like that in high school.
His district is the entire Upper Peninsula and northern part of lower peninsula. The U.P. is Democratic, but conservative and the lower part is Republican and very conservative. Except for certain progressive pockets like Marquette and Escanaba, it's very rural. I seriously doubt a primary challenge would be successful; although I wish it would be.
He was a State police officer, who I believe was injured on the job and left the state police. In 1990 his political career was nearly over as he lost in a run for Michigan State Senate. In 1992 Republican Congressman Bob Davis retired; Stupak got the nomination and won against a weak opponent. He's never had a strong Republican challenger. Mainly because he is a Republican.
He's always been conservation and an avid Catholic; but about 10 years ago his teenage son passed away and he really jumped on the Right to Life bandwagon. I don't know, maybe that's how he deals with his sons death. By his deep faith. He needs to realize that if he helps block health care, he will be killing an emmence amount of people, some fast and some slowly. He's certainly not known as a mental giant. I think he is enjoying his 15 minutes of fame and making the Catholic church happy at the same time. He was always conservative; but is moving right more and more.
I obliously don't know about his involvement in The Family; but from knowing him, I would guess he was heavily involved and it fed his ego to be surrounded by the people he had around him.
Interesting enough, his wife was the mayor of their home town of Menominee. She was defeated a couple years ago; even in their home town. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt a primary challenge would work. I'd love to help a good candidate try.
