This kind of flew through my mind earlier today. You pay car insurance so the risk of an accident isn't completely on your shoulders, the odds of a car accident are slim but you make sure to pay the insurance because you want to be covered if it ever happens.
Government is similar. You pay your taxes in case you need a banking system you are covered, in case you need roads to drive your car on you are covered, if you want that car to have safety features, guess what you are covered. Government covers all of these and more.
Is it that awful that progressives want this very large insurance policy to be effective?
Conservatives would rather get rid of a lot of the coverage that government provides them and make society a whole lot riskier. Personally, I would not want to handle my own police investigations, I can hardly find my wallet in the morning. If I had to handle my own food safety on top of my other responsibilities, I really don't know when I would have time to sleep.
