The WH is actively looking for a potential replacement for Kagan should she get the Supreme Court position (it's basically a lock at this point). So they've been looking actively for those who would go on the court.
Right now the WH is looking at Christine Gregoire, the governor of WA.
Gregoire on the Short list for Solicitor General
Gregoire, a 2-term incumbent and a former WA AG, has been a rumored contender for other admin positions. But the WH has informed top aides to WA members that she is under serious consideration, according to several sources inside the delegation.
An admin official confirmed Gregoire's name is one of those being considered. Gregoire endorsed candidate Obama just before the WA caucuses in '08, offering a helping hand as Obama picked up two-thirds of the state's delegates.
There's a reason for this. Obama wants to be the first president to name three consecutive women to the court. He expects he'll get another chance assuming Justice Ginsberg steps down.
Assuming she's the pick, she'll be waiting in the wings for the next justice to step down. The Solicitor General (as we've seen) is a remarkably easy stepping stone (relatively speaking) to being nominated to the court.
