Hello, I am a supporter of California State Assemblyman John Laird (D). He is running for State Senate in California's 15th State Senate district. This district is located in Central California. This seat was formerly held by Abel Maldonado (R) but this seat should belong to the Democrats. Obama won it and I am not talking about 2,5 or even 10 points. I am talking about 20 points. Laird's opponent is Sam Blakesee (R) from the southern part of the district. Blakesee is a strong candidate and we cannot let him win against a liberal progressive like John Laird.
About John Laird: Even before the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Laird has always advocated against offshore drilling. He prevented oil rigs being built off the Santa Cruz coast and has worked to make sure California can protect its coasts from a spill like the Santa Barbara one in 1969. Blakesee though said he still supports offshore oil drilling, even after the Deepwater Horizon spill. Laird is an advocate for green energy as well. We can also count on him to protect California's coasts in other ways too. He has fought against cruise ships dumping waste into the ocean and invasive species that destroy coastal habitats. Blakesee does not even address coastal issues on his website. You may have heard about California's budget cuts to their state parks and the threat of closing them. Laird is a strong proponent of a measure that will increase funding for state parks. We cannot close our state parks which are not only some of the most beautiful in the world, they also attract tourists and money. On education, Laird believes that California needs stronger schools. He believes they do not need budget cuts because education is extremely important for the kids. If you are wondering where Laird stands on LGBT rights, Laird is openly gay and has been endorsed by EQCA who supports gay rights.
We need more progressive like John Laird in the California State Senate. The Democrats are two seats away from a 2/3 majority. It looks like we will pick up one seat in November but we will still be one seat away. The 15th District is not up again until 2012. Without a 2/3 majority, the Democrats will not be able to push legislation through because Schwarzenegger will veto most of it. Although I hope Jerry Brown wins, it is possible Meg Whitman (R) will become California's next governor. Her policies are similar to Schwarzenegger's which means more budget cuts. This means less funding for California's world famous and historical state parks as well as the schools in my state. With more than a 2/3 majority, we can stop the budget cuts, restore California's schools, social programs and magnificant state parks. Electing John Laird is not about turning one State Senate seat blue, it is about turning California's policies blue. For this reason, please join me in making a few phone calls for John Laird by clicking the link below. We need more State Senators like him!
